Aligning Sponsorship Strategy with Media Reality in a Converging Market
How we helped Telenet review its sponsorship strategy with a focus on future relevance, measurement, and governance in a changing media landscape.

Context
Telenet operates at the intersection of brand sponsorship and media distribution. As a leading telecom and media player, the brand is both an investor in sports and entertainment partnerships and a distributor of premium content through its own platforms.
As the media landscape evolved, with shifting broadcast rights, changing viewer behaviour, and increasing fragmentation between free to air and pay TV, Telenet faced a fundamental question. How can sponsorship continue to deliver brand impact and relevance when the underlying media ecosystem is changing?
Telenet engaged The Missing Link to provide an independent review of its sponsorship strategy, with a specific focus on future relevance, measurement, and governance.
Our Role
The Missing Link was appointed as a strategic advisor to assess how Telenet's sponsorship portfolio performs in a changing media context and how it could be managed more deliberately going forward.
The assignment focused on two core areas:
- Evaluating the current sponsorship footprint in light of market shifts and media distribution dynamics
- Defining a clearer, more consistent approach to measurement and future partnership structures
The objective was not to redesign the portfolio from scratch, but to create clarity and support informed decision making at brand and leadership level.
Approach
We conducted a structured review of Telenet's sponsorship portfolio across sports, entertainment, and cultural platforms, assessing brand fit, reach, and exposure against evolving consumption patterns.
Scenario thinking played a key role in the analysis, helping Telenet understand how changes in media availability and viewing behaviour could influence sponsorship effectiveness over time.
In parallel, we worked on a simplified measurement logic, identifying which brand objectives sponsorship can realistically influence and how those can be tracked more consistently. This included principles for future contracts, where performance, clarity, and accountability are embedded from the outset.
Outcome
The project provided Telenet with a clearer strategic lens on sponsorship in a converging media market. It created a shared understanding of risks, opportunities, and trade offs between brand visibility, media exposure, and long term relevance.
By linking sponsorship strategy more closely to media reality and measurable objectives, Telenet is better equipped to manage partnerships proactively rather than reactively, and to evolve its portfolio in line with both brand ambitions and distribution dynamics.
